Twenty Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have been rescued in a clearance operation by troops in Borno State, the Army said yesterday.
Nine suspected Boko Haram spies were also arrested.
The operation was conducted in collaboration with Chadian Defence Forces (CDF).
Those rescued are 16 children, three women and eight men, a statement by the Army Operations Media Coordinator, Col. Aminu Iliyasu, said.
lIiyasu said 15 persons were rescued when troops of Operation Lafiya Dole’s 7 Division Garrison and the Army’s Super Camp 4 intensified clearance on Goni, Gambomi, Kadamari, Melim, Gondori and Jantilu in Kaga Local Government.
The statement reads: “Among them were eight adult males, one adult female and six children. Preliminary investigation revealed that they spent three days wandering in the bush trying to link any community where they could find succour.
“They were promptly evacuated; the females and children were handed over to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) IDPs camp while the adult males were handed over to the 7 Military Intelligence Brigade for profiling and subsequent integration into the IDPs camp.”
Col. Iliyasu added that a similar operation at Ngoshe and Pulka, by troops of 82 Division Task Force Battalion at Strong Response Area Ngoshe, rescued 12 locals, comprising two women and 10 children.
They have been screened, documented and handed over to officials of the International Organisation for Migrants at Pulka IDPs camp.
He added that on October 5, troops deployed at Njimtilo and Dalori conducted Operation Positive Identification at checkpoints aimed at arresting fleeing Boko Haram criminals, informants, sympathisers and logistics suppliers.
“The troops conducted thorough searches and screening of pedestrians and commuters moving in and out of Maiduguri Municipal on Maiduguri-Damaturu-Bama Road. Those suspected to have links with the insurgents were further investigated at a military facility.
“Similarly, troops arrested nine male suspects in a hamlet in Mainok general area. Preliminary investigation shows that suspects are Boko Haram spies. The suspects are currently undergoing interrogation,” he added.
